Digital transformation drives most companies to establish strategies to utilize digitalization opportunities, transform their operations to strengthen their competitive power by using digital technologies and optimizing or create new services focusing on sustainability, operational excellence and digitalization.
To comply with these objectives the operation and maintenance department must rethink their existing strategies and adapt their maintenance function to use digital capabilities available and deliver more efficient maintenance by using condition monitoring and predictive maintenance to extract more useful life from the equipment.
Predictive maintenance can extend from traditional Condition Monitoring (CM) measuring techniques, looking at selected failure modes, to the full concept of Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) and ensuring the condition of the whole function by establishing a preventive maintenance programme that combines both predetermined and predictive maintenance.
This can be done though an RCM process with the main objective to determine the most efficient maintenance approach for the applicable function, managed and executed by a specific maintenance function (organization).
The choice of best maintenance approach can be individual and heavily dependent on the organization capability, ability and culture.
Introducing reliability maintenance and CBM with an increasing level of complexity could require a very different organization with other type of resources to deliver a sustainable service. The solution might be outsourcing or other form of cooperation’s with other companies and stakeholders.
Being able to determine the right strategy is a challenge and it can be hard to get the necessary support from management without being able to quantify the costs and benefits.
By connecting the maintenance with the company strategy and introducing the concept of life-cycle cost, this could be a valuable tool in comparing different options and identify cost for each option which it occurs over its lifetime such as purchase, operation, maintenance and support.

Joar has 15 years of experience working in the maritime industry and within maintenance and inspection management. His work ranges from implementing basic inspection and test activities to more complex and extensive programmes based on systematic like risk-based inspection (RBI), condition-based maintenance (CBM) and reliability centered maintenance (RCM). Joar is also responsible for certifying companies that want to qualify their services related to CM and CBM including everything from sensors, systems and data infrastructure to verification of the maintenance analysis (RCM) and applicable CM methods part of the service.
