2S8: Keeping Out Environmental Contaminants

Meredith Christman , Product Marketing Manager, IMI Sensors, Division of PCB Piezotronics, Inc.

Description

In dusty or wet vibration monitoring applications, sealing of the sensor itself as well as sealing of the cable to the sensor is of prime importance in order to avoid contamination of the signal. But how sealed is it?  Is there a way to quantify “sealed”?  That’s where ingress protection (IP) ratings come into play.  The IP rating system provides specific levels of “sealedness” and details on the specific tests that need to be successfully passed in order to achieve a particular level.
